We're developing Surface Area Sensing to leverage our proprietary Metal Gel™ circuitry for precise, stretchable, and conformal sensing across large or irregular surfaces. By patterning arrays of strain-sensitive traces into broad geometries, our sensors can transform complex material behavior—such as stretch, compression, and deformation—into rich, high-resolution electrical signals.

Surface Area Sensing 

Liquid Wire™ surface area sensors provide high-resolution data on contact, pressure, and deformation across large or irregular surfaces. Built with our patented Metal Gel™, these sensors stretch, flex, and conform to complex geometries while maintaining consistent electrical performance.

Unlike rigid arrays or traditional capacitive mats, our stretchable sensors can be embedded into soft systems—robotic skins, wearables, medical interfaces, or industrial safety equipment—where movement, curvature, and durability are essential. Custom sensing zones and tunable sensitivity allow you to design for exactly what you need: distributed pressure mapping, contact detection, or load distribution across any surface that moves.

Multiple Metal Gel™ traces are routed across the same flexible laminate, enabling differentiated strain readings across zones.

Trace densities can be tuned, with spacing under 2.5 mm, allowing precise coverage of large surface areas.

Sensor shape, trace routing, and attachment zones can be tailored to complex 3D surfaces or garments.

 Scalable integration

Devices can be fabricated up to 350 mm x 238 mm in a single sheet—and modularly extended further.

 Robust Performance

Sensors maintain repeatable readings even under repeated high-strain cycles (30% strain for over 1 million cycles) with minimal hysteresis.

  Thermoformable

Our surface area sensors withstand thermoforming and some in-mold processes.

 Reliable Connectivity

Moreover, the same Metal Gel™ conductor that measures strain can simultaneously transmit digital data on established protocols like I2C, USB, and SPI. The resistance and impedance changes are easily detectable but have negligible effects on digital signal transmission, ensuring no disruption to the electrical system's function.
